Verdict Is In: On's Cloudsurfer Trail is A Fan Favourite

An in depth review of On Running's CloudSurfer from Kurt Goddard, leader of the Devon Deer Running Group.

On Cloudsurfer Trail: A Versatile Trail Runner's Dream

After logging well over 100km in the On Cloudsurfer Trail shoes, including training and running a grueling 54km ultra race, I can confidently say these shoes have exceeded my expectations. As a heavier runner (190 lbs), finding the right balance of cushioning, stability, and durability can be challenging, but the Cloudsurfer Trail delivers on all fronts.

Fit and Comfort

The standout feature of these shoes is their exceptional fit. Even with my orthotics, I experienced zero numbness - a common issue I've faced with other shoes. The roomy toe box and secure midfoot hold create a perfect balance. However, during an intense rainstorm, I noticed some movement with my orthotics, so be mindful in extremely wet conditions.

Stability and Support

Despite their higher stack height, these shoes offer surprising stability. As someone prone to rolling ankles and typically favoring low-drop shoes, I was initially apprehensive. However, the Cloudsurfer Trail provided a stable platform even on varied terrain. This stability, combined with the plush cushioning, makes for a unique and comfortable ride.

Cushioning and Impact Absorption

The CloudTec pods, On's signature technology, truly shine in these shoes. They offer exceptional impact absorption, making them the best in On's lineup for cushioning. Even after a 9-hour ultra run, my feet felt remarkably good - no blisters, no hot spots, just comfort.

Versatility

While not designed for extremely technical terrain, these shoes excel on a variety of surfaces. From crushed gravel to light trails and even some road sections, the Cloudsurfer Trail transitions seamlessly. I completed about 1500m of elevation gain without issues, though the relatively shallow lugs might limit performance on very technical or muddy trails.

Durability

After 100km of hard use, including an ultra and runs through all kinds of conditions (rain, puddles, even ocean tides), the shoes are holding up well. The upper still looks great and cleans easily. However, as a heavier runner, I've noticed some wear on the CloudTec pods. While not a deal-breaker, it's something to consider for long-term durability.

Breathability and Quick-Drying

One of the most impressive features is how quickly these shoes dry. Whether splashing through puddles or getting caught in a downpour, the Cloudsurfer Trail sheds water efficiently and dries rapidly, reducing the risk of blisters on long runs.

Aesthetics

The Flame | Dustrose colorway is eye-catching and received many compliments. The vibrant orange upper contrasts beautifully with the dusty rose midsole, making these shoes as stylish as they are functional.

Comparison to Other On Models

Having run in the Cloudvistas, Cloudventures, and Cloudultras, I'd place the Cloudsurfer Trail as the most comfortable for longer distances on moderate trails. For extremely technical terrain, I'd still lean towards the Cloudultra, but for most trail running scenarios, the Cloudsurfer Trail is my new go-to.

Conclusion

The On Cloudsurfer Trail is an excellent choice for trail runners looking for a versatile, comfortable shoe that can handle long distances and varied terrain. While not designed for the most technical trails, it excels in comfort, stability, and quick-drying capabilities. Despite some early wear on the CloudTec pods for heavier runners, the overall performance and comfort make these shoes a standout in On's trail running lineup. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another pair and highly recommend them
